Advancement to Detailed Design Phase for Burnaby Lake’s New Aquatic and Arena Facility

Key features of the upcoming facility include:

– 50m pool with 10 lanes
– Diving tower and boards
– Combined leisure and 6-lane 25m pool
– Family hot tub
– NHL-sized arena for ice and dry floor activities

This revised project aims to achieve substantial cost savings compared to an earlier concept that the City Council decided to discard earlier this year. While preserving essential elements such as the 50m pool and arena, the new vision streamlines costs by consolidating the leisure pool and 6-lane pool into a single entity.

The City will now initiate the detailed design development and costing phase of the project. A comprehensive construction timeline will be presented in a subsequent report to the Council, anticipated in early spring 2024.

About the Project:

The Burnaby City Council has greenlit the Burnaby Lake Recreation Complex (BLRC) project to progress into the detailed design phase, marking a significant stride towards realizing an innovative aquatic and arena facility at Burnaby Lake.

The upcoming facility will feature a 50m pool with 10 lanes, diving tower and boards, combined leisure and 6-lane 25m pool, family hot tub, and an NHL-sized arena for ice and dry floor activities. The project aims to achieve noteworthy cost savings compared to an earlier concept discarded by the City Council earlier this year. While retaining key elements like the 50m pool and arena, the revamped project reduces costs through measures such as combining the leisure pool and 6-lane pool into a unified structure. The City will now proceed with the detailed design development and costing phase of the project, with a construction timeline expected to be outlined in an upcoming report to the Council in early 2024.
