Summer Lights in English Bay: Vancouver’s New Free Fireworks Show Returns This July
A free, one-night fireworks show kicks off the B.C. Day-long weekend at English Bay Beach Park
It’s official. The City of Vancouver has confirmed Summer Lights in English Bay, a free fireworks show landing on the sand this summer. After last year’s news that the Honda Celebration of Light was ending, the city is bringing fireworks back over the water, and you won’t pay a cent to watch.
The End of the Celebration of Light
In November 2025, the Vancouver Fireworks Festival Society announced that the Honda Celebration of Light was cancelled indefinitely. The decision followed months of outreach to governments and the business community.
The festival began in 1990 as the Symphony of Fire and grew into one of the longest running offshore fireworks events in the world. It drew big summer crowds and fed local tourism for decades. In the end, rising production costs, reduced federal and provincial funding, and softer private investment made the event impossible to sustain.
What’s Replacing It
After the cancellation, Mayor Ken Sim proposed a single-night show, and City Council approved it. Now the date and name are set. Summer Lights in English Bay takes place July 31, 2026 at English Bay Beach Park. The City of Vancouver presents the event, BrandLive produces it, and the Vancouver Park Board is supporting.
- No registration or tickets. Residents and visitors are all welcome.
- The show kicks off the B.C. Day long weekend.
- It also closes out Vancouver Pride Week.
- Food trucks will be on site, with West End restaurants nearby.
- Public viewing areas are planned along English Bay.
The City says more details are coming in the weeks ahead, including show timing, designated viewing areas, road closures, transit tips, accessibility information, and public safety reminders.
For West End and downtown residents, this is one more reason a walkable address near the water keeps its appeal. Free, well-attended summer events like this one are part of what makes neighbourhoods around English Bay so easy to live in and so easy to sell.
