Major Redevelopment Planned for Burnaby’s REVS Bowling Site

More details have surfaced regarding the multi-family and mixed-use development set to replace the REVS bowling alley and entertainment complex in Burnaby.
A recent city report outlines plans for a transit-oriented development at 5502 Lougheed Highway, featuring a trio of residential towers.

The tallest tower is proposed to reach 60 storeys, with the other two standing at 54 and 46 storeys. Additionally, a two-storey amenity building is being considered for the southwest corner of the site.

Aiming Higher: Development Plans Evolve
Keltic Canada Development, the applicant behind the project, completed the acquisition of the longtime Metro Vancouver recreation hub in March 2023. Previously, Keltic’s vice president of development, Julian Ward, estimated tower heights ranging from 35 to 55 storeys, but the latest proposal suggests an even more ambitious scale.
The development will include 1,667 residential units, broken down as follows:
1,190 market strata units
242 market rental units
232 non-market rental units, priced 20% below the CMHC median
Commercial space will line Lougheed Highway, integrating retail and services into the community.

Access and Infrastructure Enhancements
Site access is primarily planned from Goring Street at the southeast corner, with a secondary single-point exit onto Lougheed Highway. The proposal also includes a minor bylaw amendment to the Brentwood Town Center Plan, allowing for commercial frontage along Lougheed Highway. If approved, this change will take effect following the council’s second reading of the rezoning application.

A New Public Gateway and Community Features
A notable design update includes a pedestrian-oriented plaza at the northwest corner, envisioned as a welcoming gateway to the site. The plaza will feature:
Public seating areas
A kids’ play zone
Public art installations
A streamside pathway

Parking and transportation are also key considerations:
946 parking spaces for strata residents
111 spaces for market rentals
74 visitor parking spots
109 spaces for rental residents
One commercial parking space per 55m², with shared visitor use
3,342 secured residential bike parking spaces
334 visitor bike parking spots
100% EV-ready residential parking

The city council will review the report at an upcoming meeting, where recommendations for first and second readings of the rezoning bylaw will be discussed.

REVS Burnaby: A Legacy Nearing Its End
While the redevelopment plan progresses, REVS Burnaby remains open to the public. The existing bowling alley, originally constructed in 1962 as Brentwood Lanes, has long been a staple in the community. As Western Canada’s largest 10-pin bowling centre, REVS features 48 lanes, a fitness gym, and dining areas across its 64,000 sq. ft. space.
