Traffic congestion isn’t new in Vancouver, but things are about to get much worse over the coming months.
According to the BC Ministry of Transportation, a stretch of Broadway will be closed to vehicles as construction continues on the SkyTrain extension.

Broadway Closure in Vancouver
A complete closure will take place between Main Street and Quebec Street starting in January 2026, lasting approximately four months. The shutdown will allow crews to safely remove the temporary traffic deck installed earlier in the project, reinstall underground utilities, repave the roadway, and add soil over the station roof.
Pedestrians will still have access throughout the construction period, but drivers should expect detours and heavier congestion across nearby routes.

Why the Closure
The Ministry selected a full closure to complete the work “as quickly as possible” rather than extending disruptions through partial restrictions. While this approach should shorten the total construction timeline, it will also bring several months of significant traffic impacts.

Impact on Local Businesses
Some nearby businesses have expressed concern about the loss of vehicle traffic during the closure. With fewer customers able to reach storefronts, many expect a slower period through early 2026.

Next Phase
After the initial four-month closure, the same section of Broadway will reopen to one lane in each direction for an additional four months as finishing work continues.

Subway Project Overview
Construction on the Broadway Subway extension began in 2020 and is expected to be completed by fall 2027. The project will extend the Millennium Line to Arbutus Street, improving transit connectivity through one of North America’s busiest corridors and supporting long-term economic growth along the Broadway Corridor.
