Edmonds Town Centre Community Plan: Shaping a Sustainable and Vibrant Future

In 1994, the Edmonds Town Centre Community Plan was first adopted.

However, over time, numerous priorities have undergone significant changes at the local neighborhood level, as well as citywide and beyond.

Therefore, an enhanced and updated plan is now necessary to accurately identify the current needs of the community and effectively steer the neighborhood’s development for the forthcoming decades.

About this project:
The City of Burnaby is undertaking the development of a new community plan for the Edmonds community in southeast Burnaby. This comprehensive plan aims to establish a vision and policy direction that will shape the growth of a diverse, sustainable, and resilient Town Centre, guiding its redevelopment over the medium to long term.

The Edmonds plan places a strong emphasis on creating a thriving regional Town Centre, focusing on the creation of public spaces that promote the health, happiness, and well-being of the City of Burnaby’s residents. Among the key objectives of the plan are:

  1. Introducing new or improved parks, trails, public spaces, community services, and amenities for the residents.
  2. Expanding the variety of housing options, including market and non-market options.
  3. Accommodating regional growth in a responsible manner.
  4. Creating opportunities for local and regional employment.
  5. Facilitating reinvestment as existing buildings age.
  6. Encouraging the adoption of sustainable transportation options such as walking, transit, and cycling.
  7. Enhancing and connecting to the natural environment, including streams, riparian habitats, and other environmental assets.
  8. Building community resiliency.
  9. Achieving a carbon-neutral community by 2050.

The Edmonds Town Centre area is situated along the boundary of the City of Burnaby and the City of New Westminster, southeast of Metrotown and the City of Vancouver.

Current Progress:
Phase 1 of the Edmonds Town Centre Community Plan is currently underway. Simultaneously, the City of Burnaby is also developing new community plans for the Royal Oak and Cascade Heights Urban Village neighborhoods. Additionally, there is an ongoing effort to renew Burnaby’s Official Community Plan, which will provide a long-term vision for managing the City’s growth. The City invites community members to participate in this exciting process and contribute their ideas to shape the future of Burnaby.

The Goals:
The development of the Edmonds Town Centre Community Plan aligns with “This is Climate Action,” a framework aimed at achieving the City of Burnaby’s commitment to become carbon neutral by 2050. The preliminary goals of the community plan focus on supporting housing, sustainability, and resilience, strengthening the connections between local and regional jobs, housing, and transit, and promoting sustainable community design.
